President's Corner Fall Edition

Oct
02

How is it October already? The mornings are much cooler, and the days are getting shorter. Ride season is rapidly winding down. But there are still plenty of great riding days ahead for 2016.

During the month of October there will only be official club rides on Saturdays and Sundays.  I’m sure there will continue to be week-day/evening rides – requiring lights – but the official club rides during the week ended in September.

The 26th Annual HOT 100 has come and gone.  Congratulations and many many thanks to Kellee Inskeep for making this a successful event.

Back in June, Kellee was handed two pieces of note paper with some hand scribbled notes by Bill Heim, the ride director for the past three years. Bill was off on a bucket list quest to ride his bike across the country.

With those notes - and by asking lots of questions of lots of people - she pulled together volunteers, sponsors, and created a blue print for putting on an event of this magnitude.

Many of you know that for the last 6 month I have been training for the 41st Annual Assault on Mt. Mitchell.  This ride has been on my bucket list for maybe 15 years or so.

Historically, it was difficult to get in to the ride – requiring being part of a lottery, and doing the Assault on Marion first. But once they moved the ride to a Monday, it became a bit easier to get registered.

The 4th Annual Cary Way Murfreesboro Bike Club Kick Off Ride was a fun time of riding, eating and getting re-aquainted with members.

The Shelbyville Mills Baptist Church provided us with a great starting point for our ride, and a delicious lunch of BBQ with all the fixings afterwards.  Thank you to Jono Sims and his associate pastor Jared, for such amazing hospitality.

Hooray! It’s finally here!! The 2016  Ride Season has begun!

I hope all of you have been on your bikes or your trainers this winter so that spring riding isn’t so painful.  But if you have not – I am sure it will not take long for you to get your cycling legs back.  We have regularly scheduled rides almost every day of the week beginning Saturday, April 9.

Do you tend to hibernate during the winter months, and then regret it when you get back on the bike in the spring? I would encourage you to not let the cold weather keep you from riding.  There are many of us who continue riding through the winter months - both outside and on our trainers.

I much prefer riding outside -and have learned that if I layer right, I can tolerate most any tempurature on the bike down into the 30s.  However, if it's raining/sleeting - or there is a hard wind with no sunshine, I'll usually give in and get on my trainer for 45 - 60 minutes.
